About Yasmeen

Yasmeen Alliyah Akbar was born and raised where palm trees grow up high and dreams sore even higher, sunny Pittsburg, California. From a young age, she cherished the power of education and the places it can take her. This love for knowledge, wisdom, and community is what has led her to become the first person in her family to earn a college education. Yasmeen is a proud senior Mass Media Arts major at the Illustrious Clark Atlanta University where she has been far from shy of student leadership. In her time at CAU, Yasmeen has earned the honor of being a dean’s list scholar for 6 consecutive semesters and not only joined but served on the executive boards of HerCampus CAU, Breaking The Cycle, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Pearl Bearing Sigma Chapter. After matriculating through Clark, Yasmeen plans to become a journalist and news anchor. Through her work and reporting, she hopes to publish more positive images and accurate stories that relay the life and impact of African Americans in western society and negate the negative stereotypes and coverage that’s often placed on our community. Yasmeen lives by the quote, “life is too short to spend any moment of it on joyless activity and meaningless work.”

She has also had the pleasure of interning with the Walt Disney Company as an ABC News Production Intern during the summer of 2021 where she was able to gain first-hand experience of how producing a news series works. She aided in finding and researching stories to cover as well as interview preparation. This past semester she also was a part of the Now and Later Student Ambassador Program where she worked with a team of students to create content and promote the Now and Later brand so they could reach their target audience.

Yasmeen has an interest in all things media-- from writing to reporting. She specializes in topics like pop culture, entertainment and politics and even has a knack for social media.
